This is a collection of authentic and adapted materials intended to expose everyone who is interested in Maritime Studies to reading texts related to the discipline. The objective is to enhance their reading skills and strategies and broaden their relevant vocabulary.
Each lesson starts with some theoretical background on reading skills followed by pre-reading activities aimed at equipping students with the necessary skills to read more effectively. After this, students are required to actively engage in deducing the meaning of certain more advanced words from context by means of vocabulary exercises. The Reading Comprehension activities that follow will hopefully promote their reading skills and help them acquire confidence in dealing with authentic or semi-authentic material they are bound to encounter in real life professional situations. There follows a Cloze exercise related to the theme of the lesson which offers more practice in the mechanisms of the language and a Maritime Terminology activity. Lastly, it has been considered necessary to include a review of the most important grammatical phenomena to further consolidate the student’s knowledge of the structure of the language.
The book by no means claims to extensively cover every aspect of the anyway broad spectrum of Maritime Studies and the relevant terminology. It is merely a collection of representative materials and terms. The main objective is to give anyone who is interested in Maritime Studies the opportunity to work with authentic or slightly adapted texts and teach techniques of coping with difficulties that will hopefully prove useful in their future careers.
